Hey YOU,
I am writing to tell you about an exciting event coming up in Providence, and to tell you about ways that you can be involved in transforming the capital city of RI. The Empower Providence Project is a cultural celebration happening on Friday, October 7, 2011, culminating with a performance by Washington, DC based hip hop artist, Head-Roc, and NYC-based hip hop and jazz fusion artist, Spiritchild.
Head-Roc is an independent musician who has gained most of his fan base through two decades of live performances and activism. He has been outspoken on issues of racism, neglect of communities of color, and inequities in urban school districts, and he regularly writes songs advocating for workers rights, environmental justice, and using music to grow political movements.
Spiritchild, who is from the south Bronx and Brooklyn, is also known for integrating activism and music. He uses his art to converse with his audience about the injustices facing the poor and oppressed, the dangers of climate change, and the need to take on environmental justice issues, in New York City and around the world. He is also an instructor in songwriting at several public schools throughout New York.
The Empower Providence Project will be held October 7 at the Roots Cultural Center, 276 Westminster Street in downtown, Providence, beginning at 8:00 PM, and it includes performances from members of the RI-based Isis Storm collective, a group of women who use art, words and music to empower women and underserved communities through performances, workshops, and media projects.
The event is open to the public and attendees of all ages. Admission is $7 to $12 dollars depending on group rates, special discounts and whether tickets are bought ahead of time or at the door. Prior to the event, from 6:00-8:00 PM, event sponsors and the community-at-large are invited to network, snack on refreshments and learn about some of the community issues that exist here in RI at “The People of Culture Mixer and Marketplace.”
The 6-8 PM Mixer and Marketplace will be open to the public, and youth from Environmental Justice League of RI, RI Jobs with Justice and Mount Hope Learning Center are among the anticipated attendees. It is our goal to gather resources and engage youth and attendees on the topic of using art and media for changing communities.
The Mixer and Marketplace presenters will be limited exclusively to sponsors of the event, but sponsor-vendor rates start at $35 to encourage the participation of grassroots organizations and small businesses. Click here to download the full sponsorship packet, including the sponsorship rate information or contact Reza Rites: (email) singsvenus@gmail.com; (phone) 401-217-9680.
Thank you for time and consideration,
The Empower Providence Project & Coalition
