Venus Sings Brings Music to Celebration of Media Diversity

AWARDEES OF THE 22ND ANNUAL METCALF AWARDS ANNOUNCED

WHAT: The 22nd Annual Metcalf Diversity in Media Awards breakfast presentation to Jon Baker, The Times of Pawtucket Newspaper for “Youth of the Year Welcomed Home”; Jewish Voice and Herald, Flo Jonic, WRNI radio for “Gay Burial Rights”. The Providence American Newspaper and Managing Editor, Peter Wells will receive a special recognition award for “Contributions of A Diverse Community”, for the paper’s consistent coverage of Rhode Island’s burgeoning African-American, Hispanic and Asian community. Former Metcalf Awardee, RICJ Leadership for A Future alumni, Reza Clifton will provide music for the award presentation breakfast. A radio producer, online publisher, and freelance writer, Reza can be heard on WRIU Saturdays,9-11a.m. and read on her websites, RezaRites.RI. and Venus Sings.com.

WHEN: Thursday, May 6, 8 a.m., The Hotel Providence, 149 Mathewson Street

WHO: Rhode Island for Community and Justice RICJ is a social justice organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism and promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education.

Awardees were chosen by a panel of judges led by the University of Rhode Island Journalism Department, representatives from Amica Insurance, AAA of Southern New England, Duffy and Shanley, and Rhode Island College Communications Department.
