Reza Does Reggae: Venus Sings on Reggae Showcase - the February 7 Playlist

by Reza Corinne Clifton

KINGSTON, RI - On Sunday, February 7, 2010, I filled in for veteran dj and host, Peter Dante, on his weekly Sunday radio program on WRIU, 90.3 FM. Several weeks before, I had responded to outreach by Dante, the founder and host of "The Reggae Showcase on WRIU" - and the station's World Music Director - who needed a replacement that day. Enthralled, I responded and prepared.

One advantage for my "Venus Sings on Reggae Showcase" weekend was that it fell on the birthday of legendary reggae singer, social activist, and, for some, spiritual healer Bob Marley. From his days alive and from Jamaica to Zimbabwe to decades after his death and from Rhode Island to Japan, music by this artist and father, is still significant for many.

Therefore, and as I'll see you below, I started with a heavy dose of the man, the "legend," the "duppy conqueror," before moving through a host of the familiar, approved, and highly acclaimed in reggae, channelling as much Dante and Marley as I could.
