On Saturday, December 26, 2009, Venus Sings and special guest, Agent OJ, produced and hosted a Venus Sings Radio year-end tribute to top-ranking, "mighty fine" women in music. See who those artists were below.
KINGSTON, RI - When I realized that WRIU's last Voices of Women show of 2009 (and the decade) was going to be a Venus Sings edition, I was thrilled. I have received an abundance of joy, creative motivation, and purpose through my work on the show, and to be assigned with reflecting and sharing that experience was really just one more gift.
In preparation for the December 26 show, I reviewed playlists from each prior time I hosted Venus Sings Radio / Voices of Women in 2009, paying particular attention to three categories: 1) most-played artists; 2) most-played albums; and 3) most-played songs. And I almost stopped there. However, after realizing that I had brought a wide spectrum of new-to-09 releases and performers to the air - and as a matter of fact had additional folks to preview - I added to my plans for the December 26 show.
Reflecting on the slot before Voices of Women, which is currently vacant, and how much time I needed for 09 artists alone, instead of starting at 9 AM, as is the show's normal start-time, I aimed for an 8:00 or 8:30 AM start. And with so much extra time, and during a season known for family warmth, I brought my sister, "Agent OJ," to help reveal what she dubbed the "mighty fine in 09."
We started at 8:15 AM with Zili Misik, an all-female, Boston-based band that had a new release and with whom I had an opportunity to collaborate in 09.
